Why does my xbox 360 controller keep disconnecting?

It’s not wireless, it’s plugged in and I know it is plugged in good because I jam it into the console pretty hard. It just randomly says to “please reconnect controller” about ever 5 minutes even though it’s connected and the controller flashes but it lets me play sometimes. The controller along with the console is about 3 or 4 years old. How do I fix this problem?

  1. The contacts on the controller port might just be bad, or simply dirty. I’d recommend cleaning the controller port and the contacts on the inside of the plug on the controller cable as well. When I need to do this, I just use a can of compressed air, which you can buy at most electronic supply stores, or generally anywhere you could buy an xbox in the first place.

If cleaning doesn’t help, and the plug actually feels a bit loose, you might just have loose contacts, and unless you are willing to pull a few things apart, you may as well just get a new xbox at that point.

If you sit a bit far away from the thing, and there’s any chance at all that you’re pulling the wire off the ground when you move, you might just be loosening it slightly without noticing, but it’s unlikely you wouldn’t notice it coming out. If it’s pulled out a little every time it disconnects, this might be the problem.
