  1. 60 AND 20 gig play all ps2 games

80 gig plays limited ps2 games

40 gig does not play any ps2 games

    all ps3 play ps1 games

  2. The 40 gb cannot and will not play PS2 games. There’s no way to make it play PS2 games other than PS2 hardware to it.

The 20 and 60 gb has the emotion engine, which was the CPU used in the PS2, so for the most part, it can play a lot of PS2 games, but it can’t play ALL PS2 games. Sony told game developers to follow Sony’s guidelines in order to make their games playable on the PS3, but some companies didn’t follow Sony’s guidelines, so those games will have problem on the PS3.

The 80 gb had the emotion engine taken away, but it still has the GPU (graphics processing unit), so software emulation can be used to play those games. The problem with software emulation is that it’s a tedious process, so there are more PS2 games that can’t be played on the 80 gb compared to the 20 and 60 gb.

If you want to play PS2 games on your PS3, you’ll have to get either the 60 or 80 gb version. The 60 gb has been discontinued, so it’s going to be hard to find one other than bidding for it on eBay. The 80 gb can be easily found, and for the most part, it does a pretty good job with backward compatibility. The downside is that you have to keep updating your PS3 because new games are made compatible.

  3. Yes, it does because of backwards capability. However it doesn’t work for the 40gb.

    “Backward compatibility PlayStation (all models)

    PlayStation 2 (20 GB, 60 GB, 80 GB models) “

  4. FYI:

There are 3 games that do not work on a PS3 I have found so far.

    Guitar Hero I

    Guitar Hero II

    Guitar Hero Rocks The 80’s

  5. 40gb doesn’t play ps2 titles.

    Both the 80GB and 40GB PS3 models come standard with Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.), Blu-ray Disc™ (BD) player, built-in HDD, 1080p high-definition output, Wi-Fi connectivity and SIXAXIS™ wireless controller.

In addition to the larger HDD capacity, the 80GB model focuses on offering the incredible graphic quality, stunning gameplay, improved audio and visual fidelity that PS3 games are known for by maintaining the PlayStation®2 backwards compatibility through software instead of hardware. The new 40GB model will also be packaged with the Spider-Man™3 movie on Blu-ray Disc. The 40GB model does not have PS2 backwards compatibility, although does maintain backwards compatibility for original PlayStation titles. The 40GB PS3 has 2 USB ports, where the 80GB PS3 has 4 USB ports. In addition, the 40GB PS3 does not have the multi-media memory card slots. Consumers can use a variety of after-market accessories for transferring their media to PS3 via the USB ports.
